Service Incident Report and Apology: Running Activities Not Appearing in Runner’s Rings
On October 30–31, 2026, some running activities were not properly saved in Runner’s Rings. We sincerely apologize and explain the cause, the recovery process, and our commitment to preventing similar incidents.
An Issue Affecting Running Activities
On October 31, 2026, we discovered an issue preventing some running activities from appearing correctly in Runner’s Rings.
New activities were missing, and Rings Today was showing zero distance and zero participants.
We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and concern this caused, especially at the end of the month.
What Caused the Issue?
Our investigation confirmed that the problem originated within the Runner’s Rings database, rather than the users’ devices or external running platforms.
A database operation introduced during the development of a new feature was interfering with the process of saving running activities.
Although Strava activity notifications were reaching our system, some activities could not be saved successfully.
We also identified Garmin activities awaiting processing.
How We Responded
We examined the production database and error logs and identified the faulty database operation.
After correcting it, we successfully tested the activity-saving process.
We then recovered two pending Garmin activities and replayed 16 Strava activity events identified from our logs.
This resulted in 15 newly saved Strava activities and one successful link to an existing activity.
We also confirmed that Rings Today was receiving updated activity data again.
While these recovery steps were successful, we cannot yet guarantee that every activity missing during the incident has been recovered.
What We Learned
Runner’s Rings exists to preserve the journeys and efforts of runners.
New features are important, but reliable activity recording must always come first.
This incident reminded us that every change must be evaluated for its impact on existing functionality.
We will strengthen our testing procedures, including checks of activity saving, connected services, Rings Today, and rankings.
We will also work toward better monitoring and earlier detection of similar issues.
Moving Forward
Every run represents someone’s time, effort, and personal journey.
We want Runner’s Rings to be a place where those memories can be preserved with confidence.
We sincerely apologize again for this incident, and we will continue improving the service.
Visualize Your Running Journey as Growth Rings.
Thank you for running with Runner’s Rings.
