2026.09.14 / Runner's Rings

Runner's Rings

Runner's Rings

Runner's Rings

Why We Built Region Conquest
— A Map That Makes You Ask, “Where Should I Run Next?”

2026.09.14 / Runner's Rings Development Note

From the beginning, Runner's Rings was never meant to be just another place to list distance and run counts. When running routes are accumulated on a map, a different kind of story appears.

Two runners can both cover 100 km, yet the map looks completely different if one repeats familiar roads while the other gradually explores new towns.

We wanted to see how far the map had expanded

In Japan, Runner's Rings lets you move through the hierarchy of country → prefecture → municipality. For a prefecture, you can see how many municipalities you have conquered, your conquest rate, and how many remain.

This is not a leaderboard. It is a way to notice places on your own map that you have not run yet.

Why ALL and yearly views are separate

ALL represents your entire accumulated running history — your long-term “rings.” A yearly view shows only that year's runs, making it possible to see how your map expanded during one season of your life.

Unvisited regions can change your next run

Showing the places that remain turns the map from a record of the past into a tool for choosing what comes next. A blank neighboring town can become a reason to run one road farther.

Sharing only the region that matters

Prefecture conquest can be shared as an image cropped to that prefecture, with conquered municipalities highlighted in Runner's Rings pink. Country sharing follows the same idea at the next administrative level where supported.

A common idea that can expand worldwide

Administrative boundaries differ around the world, so Runner's Rings avoids building a separate special design for every place. Instead, the goal is a common system that can use available boundary data for countries, states, regions, and smaller areas.

Where will you run next?

Region conquest is not meant to turn running into a game for its own sake. It is meant to let your running history inspire the next place you want to explore.
