Runner's Rings

Strava

「Strava
Runner's Rings

Intervals.icu

Finding Another Path Beyond Strava: Why We Tried Intervals.icu

Data Connections

While building Runner's Rings, one question kept coming back: how can more runners bring their past running history into the service?

Strava is useful, but it cannot be the only path

Runner's Rings supports Strava because it is a convenient way to automatically bring in daily activities.

But during development, we ran into a practical limitation: the number of athletes who can connect through the Strava API is limited.

We did not want the answer to be, “just wait until the Strava limit is expanded.”
We wanted another path for runners who were ready to try Runner's Rings now.

Runners use many different watches

Garmin, COROS, Polar, SUUNTO, Wahoo, Fitbit — runners use many different devices and services.

Direct connections to every manufacturer would be ideal, but that is not simple for an independently developed service.

So instead of building a completely separate connection for every brand, we started looking for a common bridge between multiple services.

That search led us to Intervals.icu

Intervals.icu may be less familiar to many runners than services such as Strava or Garmin Connect, especially for people who do not spend much time with cycling or detailed training analysis.

But once we looked more closely, we found that it can connect with a wide range of watches and fitness services.

“Maybe this can create another route for people who do not use Strava.”
That was the reason we started experimenting with Intervals.icu in Runner's Rings.

We registered and tested it ourselves first

Before asking anyone else to use it, we went through the registration process, connected services, and tested how much historical data could be retrieved.

Some parts of the setup were not immediately obvious, so we are also working on clearer guidance based on the actual steps we followed.

Now we need to test more real-world setups

One successful setup does not prove that every watch or service will behave the same way. The amount of historical data available may also differ depending on the connected service.

That is why we are currently asking runners using Garmin, COROS, Polar, SUUNTO and other services to test importing their data into Runner's Rings through Intervals.icu.

The goal is not to make everyone use Intervals.icu.
The goal is to let more runners bring their own running history into Runner's Rings, regardless of which watch they use.

There does not have to be only one entrance

Strava can be the best route for some runners. COROS can be another. Historical files such as FIT, GPX and TCX remain important too. Intervals.icu can become one more bridge between them.

Rather than forcing every runner into the same ecosystem, Runner's Rings should meet runners where their data already lives. We are still experimenting, but we want to keep opening more paths.
