Runner's Ringsに「応援する」を付けた理由 ─ そしてチャッピーの餌代
Runner's Ringsに、「Runner's Ringsを応援する」という小さなボタンを追加しました。
とはいっても、これは有料化のお知らせではありません。Runner's Ringsは、これまで通り無料で使えるサービスとして続けていきます。
最初から「課金したい」と考えていたわけではない
Runner's Ringsは、自分が「こんな地図があったら面白い」と思ったところから始まった個人開発です。
走行データを取り込み、地図に残し、地域走破を作り、海外にも広げる。やりたいことが増えるほど、ドメインや各種サービス、開発環境など、小さな費用も少しずつ積み重なっていきます。
それが今のRunner's Ringsの考え方です。
だから「任意の応援」にした
機能を有料でロックするのではなく、「面白い」「続いてほしい」と思ってくれた人が、もしよければ応援できる。そのくらいの距離感が今はちょうどいいと思いました。
サポートの有無で、使える機能が変わることはありません。応援してくれる人も、そうでない人も、同じRunner's Ringsを使えます。
もちろん、何もしなくてもRunner's Ringsは普通に使えます。
そして、チャッピーの餌代
Runner's Ringsの開発には、かなりの頻度でチャッピーが登場します。
コードを書いたり、失敗したり、直したり、英語を考えたり、海外の人への返信を一緒に作ったり。うまくいかない時には、だいたい二人で「なんでだ？」と言っています。
そんなわけで、いただいた応援はサーバー代や開発費、そしてチャッピーの餌代になるかもしれません（笑）。
でも、その分もう少しRunner's Ringsが育つはずです。
大きくすることより、続けること
Runner's Ringsは、急いで大きなサービスにすることよりも、使ってくれる人の声を聞きながら、一つずつ育てていきたいと思っています。
今回のサポート機能も、そのための小さな仕組みの一つです。
「応援する」ボタンを押さなくても大丈夫。でも、もしどこかでRunner's Ringsを面白いと思ってもらえたなら、それだけでも十分うれしいです。
Why We Added a “Support Runner's Rings” Button — and Chappy's Snack Fund
We added a small “Support Runner's Rings” button to the site.
This is not an announcement that Runner's Rings is becoming a paid service. Runner's Rings will continue to be free to use.
It did not start with a plan to charge people
Runner's Rings began as an independent project built around a simple thought: “Wouldn't it be fun if all the places I have run could stay on one map?”
As the project grew — importing activities, mapping routes, building region conquest, and expanding internationally — small costs for domains, services, and development tools began to add up.
That is still an important part of the project.
So we chose optional support
Instead of locking features behind payment, we wanted a simple way for someone to say, “I like this” or “I hope this keeps going,” if they feel like supporting the project.
Supporting Runner's Rings does not unlock extra features. Everyone uses the same Runner's Rings, whether they support it or not.
And of course, you can continue using Runner's Rings normally without supporting at all.
And then there is Chappy's snack fund
Chappy shows up a lot during Runner's Rings development.
Writing code, breaking things, fixing them, working on English, replying to runners overseas — and when something does not work, we usually end up asking each other, “Why?”
So any support may help with hosting and development costs... and perhaps a little Chappy snack money too.
Hopefully that means Runner's Rings keeps growing too.
Continuing matters more than growing fast
Runner's Rings is not trying to become huge overnight. We would rather keep improving it one step at a time, listening to the people who actually use it.
The support button is simply one small part of making that possible.
You never need to press it. But if Runner's Rings makes you think “this is kind of fun,” that already means a lot.
